ABOUT THE ARTIST - Margaret Wakefield
Margaret Wakefield is an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. She is mostly a self taught artist and has taken some classes at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She didn’t decide to do wildlife art, it decided for her. She paints in acrylic, watercolor and colored pencil. She won the first competition she was in and continues to do well at shows around the country. She was accepted into Red Earth (the second largest Native American show in the country) in Oklahoma City and sold out both her wildlife art and tribal art.
She devotes her days to painting and feels that the best advise she can give to anyone is to “draw, draw, draw everyday”. She has lived in the Low Country of South Carolina and now resides on the Qualla Boundary Reservation in Cherokee NC. “I’ve seen the best of the south from the mountains to the ocean and draw on those experiences to paint.” Her work is in the Great Smoky Mountain National Forest at the Oconoluftee Park and trails and is in private collections as well. You can see her work at her website www.WakefieldArtStudio.com.
